Nebraska Dry Pea & Lentil Commission (NDPLC)

The Nebraska Dry Pea & Lentil Commission was created by the Nebraska Dry Pea & Lentil Resources Act of 2020. It aims to protect and foster the health, prosperity and general welfare of its people by protecting and stabilizing the dry pea and lentil industry and the economy of the areas producing dry peas and lentils (dry peas, lentils, chickpeas, or garbanzo beans, faba beans, or lupins).

About the Commission

Each bushel of dry peas and lentils marketed in the state is an assessed excise tax of one percent (1%) of net value at the point of fist sale. These monies are deposited into the State Treasury and are used by NDPLC to advance Nebraska’s dry pea and lentil industry. Additional details on the process of collection as well as the checkoff regulations can be found at the Nebraska Department of Agriculture who helps administer the checkoff.

To ensure that funds are being spent in the best way, the board of directors oversees all expenditures. Funding proposals in each area are submitted on an annual basis, regardless of whether the research project or organization was funded the year before. The board completes two readings of the proposals and determines which will receive funds during the annual budget meeting held in June. Funds are invested in five areas as directed by the Nebraska Dry Pea and Lentils Resources Act.

The commission’s main pillars focus on market development (international and domestic), research, promotion, education, and federal legislation. This public policy guides the dry pea and lentil commission in establishing its overall policy, annual marketing plan, goals, objectives, and program priorities.

Commission Leadership

All NDPLC policies are established by a five-member board of directors. The board of directors is composed of dry pea and lentil producers from Nebraska who are appointed by the Governor.
